If you are just beginning the divorce process many of the above questions are likely swimming through your head.  When you make the choice to work within the collaborative divorce model, you are equipped with a Financial Specialist who will guide you in making informed financial decisions based on your family’s needs and abilities.

Would you trade an asset today for support over the next three years?  In the collaborative divorce process, you will discuss the opportunities and potential drawbacks of each choice.  Rather than think there is only one way to divide current assets, liabilities and future income, with the help of your divorce team, you are given all of the information that you need to make smart decisions that are best for your family.  Unlike other forms of divorce, there is no financial winner or loser in the collaborative process.

When creating your divorce team, you and your spouse select one Financial Specialist who is collaboratively trained.   This role should not be confused with your current financial advisor or tax preparer.  The financial neutral presents your current financial situation and helps you understand the consequences (good or bad) of financial decisions being considered.  The Financial Specialist’s role does not include solving your financial divorce. His or her role is to provide financial information and education (as needed) so you can make informed financial decisions you can both live with.  Additionally your Financial Specialist has unique collaborative training which allows him/her to better assist you and your spouse through the divorce process.
